I think Lonnie is using something similar for his updated 2010 Cinch Release. He has a pick on the Yahoo Hydrofoil group.

Cool, I'd buy from him then. Lonnie has fast shipping!

Only issue is where the swivel is located and where the release is located.

The swivel needs to be AFTER the release in this setup. A different design would work/layout. If the swivel is before the release the release rope will get twisted up in the skier’s rope as they are twisting the rope. I tried this release about a year ago with no luck. It would take a release without a swivel near the tower and then a separate swivel in the line to make sure the release potion of this particular release did not get twisted up with the rope.

I've tried this with the Bullet, and it works...o.k. The only problem I can see is that you have to have tension in order for it to release. If you pull and there is no tension, it just pulls the rope down. I suppose it would release eventually, and may not even load the line that much when it does. It's certainly a cost effective means of getting the job done.
Remember...It's not HOW you DO, It's HOW you LOOK when you're doing it!!!

I would also be concerned that the pin could bind up when there is a lot of tension, making it hard to release. Maybe There's something I don't see from the picture.
This would be OK if the release is pulled when a trick is going bad and you are still in the air. If you got wrapped up and pulled through the water the line could easily have 400 lb or more tension.

We hold on & ride thru 400 lbs of tension on a pretty regular basis.... as measured by the Comptech anyway. So I don't want it cutting lose that early automatically.

Seems to me this type of release would work fine as long as it's behind any swivel.

I think the point is not that the clip won't hold 400 or more pounds, but that the pin may not release very easily during high load conditions. The line tension would create a large side load on the pin and you might have to hit it with a hammer to get it to release. I'm just going by what I can see in the picture. Maybe there's something I can't see. Also, the shackle doesn't have any automatic release capability. That's still in the velcro (OK, hook & loop).

This would not be a replacement for the cinch release or bullet release. Just an added safety item. And they have been tested to release under a load of 50% of max weight which would be 700 lbs in the case of the one I would order.

Ya, that is why I am going with the tower mounted version that has zero up and down movement, so it can be released with no line tension or with line tension.
