Just a question for all the designers out there, has anybody ever tried to emulate a more simple high-camber aircraft wing when designing a hydrofoil wing? I don't know how hydrodynamics relates to aerodynamics, but I know that if you want to generate lots of lift in the air, you get a big fat cambered wing to do so. All the foil designs I've seen remind me more of a lifting body design seen in the B-2, but nothing that looks like a Cessna 150s wing, or even an modern efficient wing like that found on a 777 or A340 sans flaps and slats :). Of course extra lift means extra drag and maybe that's why I've never seen one, but you could overcome the extra drag with a bigger motored boat and stronger arms and you're good to go :).

Just curious if this has already been tried.

    Mike,

You are correct... the thicker we make the wings to generate lift, the more drag and weight we have to deal with. If all we were looking for was to maintain flight, this would probably be the solution, but since we are more of a f16 than a 747, I'm not sure we would benefit much from just gaining more lift at the cost of weight and performance. My wings are thicker than in the old days, but that's more to do with controlling the flex at takeoff than gaining lift. It would be cool to produce a 2 piece "hollow" wing just to see how it would ride - but sounds like a LOT of work. :) Just my thoughts.

I like that quote, of course it applies more to some riders than others...I think I'm riding a slow but steady Cessna if that is the spectrum to play on.

    Al,

Thanks for the invite, I might just take you up on it. Be forewarned that I wasn't good before I had to leave the sport for 2 years, and aside from one very short afternoon skiing with Don back in April I haven't done any foiling since Oct 2010. The flip side is I have a shiny new boat so at least all the people inside will look cool as I flounder out back.
