Maybe I'm just missing it, but has there been no talk of Nationals? Several of us drive down from upstate NY last year to watch and were planning on doing the same this year.

Sorry for the delay. There will not be a Nationals this year. A few folks have been looking at potential sites in AZ & NC, but nothing panned out as a workable solution.

    Wow what a shame.
Just wondering what the criteria is when looking for potential sites?

Good question - there are lots of criteria to think about when selecting a location. Safety being the number one priority followed by fun, fair and an exciting competition.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, nor is it in any priority order. But all things that are talked about and reviewed by the team organizing.
    Riding Conditions:
Safe / wide lake, plenty of space to turn corners at each end.
Deep & clean water & obstruction free
45 second run each direction at 25 mph (2000' run)
Familiar water to other hydrofoilers (instead of unknown waters)
Ability to keep away other boats - plus - plus
Boat ramp on site - plus
    Separate Practice run a plus.
    Location vs. Airport:
As near to an airport as possible.
    International airport is a plus.
Less than an hour distance - worst case.
Shuttle to airport is a plus.
    Location vs. Hotel:
Within a few miles of several hotels.
Near a sponsoring hotel with rider discount - a huge plus.
Near a sponsoring hotel with free banquet room - plus - plus.
Near a variety of hotels (budget vs. higher end) - a plus.
    Near a camp ground - a plus.
Location with a camp ground - plus - plus.
    Location vs. driving distance:
7-8 hour drive to several major cities. If we end at 3:00 on a Sunday, we want drivers to get home Sunday night.
    Location vs. Restaurant:
A good variety of restaurants within a short distance to site and hotel.
Walking distance to hotel is a plus.
    Location vs. public:
Located near a populated area - attracts visitors and sponsors.
Located in a publicly visible site - a plus
Located a short distance to local hospital
Easy to access for vendors -
Water and electric available a plus.
    Location vs. hydrofoil community:
Every event is a huge team effort. Local riders willing to volunteer time (months in advance) to help organize.
    Riders:
Secure / safe day time storage of equipment (safe from kids/spectators)
    Secure overnight storage a plus.
Safe and Easy access in / out of water
Start dock for rider prep before run
Activities during non-riding time. (Vendors, viewing, Announcing, Community interaction)
    Spectators:
    A safe location.
A great viewing location from buoy to buoy
A great viewing location with shade & swimming.
    Porta john facilities
    Public restrooms a plus.
On site food (hot food & cold drinks)
Easy parking (free is a plus)
    Costs:
A reasonable charge for the lake / facilities.

    Hi Jim,

You talked about the "location" -- but there is a LOT more to putting on a competition than just the location (which is important).

It takes about a year to put on a first class competition, and that is not just a few hours a month, but pretty much 10+ hours a week
for a YEAR to arrange everything to have a great competition.

It takes more than just a couple of dedicated people. People who can't control the entire event - but do their best
to make the best of whatever is there at the time of the actual event.

Most folks really don't know what it takes - and that's a good thing, they show up - have a BLAST, a great competition and leave.
But trust me as someone that has put on 4 of these - it's a lot of "thankless" work.

I hope that there are some folks that step up and take the challenge. I hate to see there be no Nationals.

The sport needs the competition - but the few folks that have been doing this for several years are likely burned out. It would
be FANTASTIC to see some new people/clubs step up - and especially bring the competition to some new areas.

It would be sweet to see one here in Sandpoint ID we are on a huge lake got to cross a 2 mile bridge just to get to town. It's beautiful here. Just a thought.

Agreed Todd. It would take a ton of work (as you know). It's in the back of our mind up here .. though we realize our location is a bit far north for everyone to travel. Having been the chairperson for a number of national championships (hockey of course) I have a good idea of the work it would take. Fingers are crossed that Nationals return next year!

Being new and having not put a competition event together, who are the mentors to get others involved that are willing to learn so they can take the reigns in the future. Another way to say it, if there are people beginning to work on next year I'd love to get involved to number one help out however I can and number two hopefully we start building a next round of people that can put on these kinds of events?
